Several pieces in this collection come from a single find: an inventory of 1980s S.T. Dupont lighters from a tobacconist in Milan that closed decades ago and never sold them. Many still carry the original Italian tax stamp on the underside, along with their box, papers and guarantee card — full provenance, and about as close to time travel as vintage collecting gets.

If it has never been used, does it still need servicing?

Usually, yes. Seals and gaskets dry out with age whether or not a lighter has ever been lit, so new old stock is inspected and serviced here just like everything else before it is listed.

Is new old stock worth the extra cost?

If you want the piece as a collector’s object, or as close to as-new as a lighter of this age can be, it is. If you want something to carry every day, a good used example costs less and will take further wear more gracefully.

What should a complete set include?

The lighter, its original box, and the papers or guarantee card. Some still carry the original retailer’s tax stamp, which is the strongest provenance a vintage Dupont can have.
