A vintage S.T. Dupont Ligne 2 in the full-size Grand Modèle, finished in gold plate with vertical stripes, offered complete with its original box, outer sleeve and guarantee card.
S.T. Dupont produced its first luxury lighter in 1941, and the Ligne 2 introduced in 1977 became the model the maison is known for. Vertical striping is the most restrained of its engine-turned finishes, and on the Grand Modèle it does the most work: the lines run the full height of the broad case and carry on across the fluted roller, so the whole lighter reads as one continuous vertical object. It is the finish that shows the Ligne 2's proportions most clearly, and the one that ages most gracefully, because fine parallel lines hide handling far better than a flat polished surface.
On condition we would rather be precise than flattering. The lighter presents very well and the striping is crisp across both faces. There are small dark spots in the gold plating, visible only under certain light and at certain angles — in most conditions you will not see them, but they are there and you should know before you buy. There is no wear through the plate and no brassing at the corners. It is photographed lit: it lights and holds a flame.
It comes as a set: the black S.T. Dupont box lined in tan, the outer card sleeve and the Carte de Garantie Internationale. The outer packaging shows honest age. Complete sets are getting harder to find, and the papers are a meaningful part of what a vintage Dupont is worth.
