Buying a gold S.T. Dupont

Is this solid gold or gold-plated?

Most vintage Duponts are gold-plated — typically 20 microns over brass, marked on the base. A solid case carries an 18k or 750 hallmark and is far rarer. Every listing says which it is, and our illustrated reference to solid gold models shows the hallmarks model by model.

Will the gold plating wear through?

It can, and it cannot be put back. Wear shows first on the edges, the cap rim and the high points of a pattern — which is exactly where we photograph closely, so you can judge it before you buy. A case with crisp plating has had an easy life.

Is a solid gold piece worth the premium?

A solid case is priced partly on its gold content, which gives it a floor a plated case does not have. Whether the premium suits you depends on whether you are buying something to carry or something to keep.

Is it 24k gold?

No. S.T. Dupont worked in 18k for solid cases and in gold plate over brass for the rest — 24k is too soft for a lighter case that is handled every day.

Has it been serviced, and is it guaranteed?

Yes. Every piece here is inspected and serviced where needed before it is listed, and it carries our one-year warranty. A lighter that has sat unused for years normally needs attention — we do that work first, so it arrives ready to use.

What condition should I expect?

Honest vintage condition, described as it is. Plating wears at the edges and on the high points of a pattern, lacquer can chip, and a case picks up marks over decades. Where that has happened we say so and photograph it closely.

What is a gold Dupont worth?

Can I return it?

Yes — you have 30 days from receiving it to request a return. The lighter needs to come back unused and in its original packaging with proof of purchase, and return shipping is arranged and paid by you.
